Nutritionists say: Pasta Fits a Healthy School Lunch
It’s back to school time and we’ve seen a lot of articles about packing healthy school lunches for kids! It seems that there are plenty of registered dietitians and nutritionists that agree — Pasta can be a great healthy alternative to a peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Want to learn more? - In an article for the Miami Herald, Myerly Kertis, a pediatric registered dietitian for Holtz Children’s Hospital at Jackson Memorial notes that pasta can be a good fit for picky kids in Pre-K and Kindergarten. Kertis notes that kids this age want to try new things and suggests that parents “Chop broccoli and other vegetables into tomato sauce you serve over pasta.” This disguises the veggies in a kid-friendly meal!
- On a TV segment for WBAI in Maine, Mary Lavanway, a registered dietitian for Hanaford explains ways to use last night’s leftovers to keep school lunches from getting boring! Just add some spinach, feta cheese and tomatoes to last night’s pasta and you have a healthy school lunch!
- In an article for Columbia Daily Tribune, the newspaper’s editor Julia Helvey suggests that parents should pack a pasta salad for as a healthy school lunch! She explains, “Lunch boxes now have ice packs, so foods can be kept cool and safe. I love a pasta salad that is easy to make and easy to eat.
